GREENWOOD LEFLORE HOSPITAL

Greenwood Leflore Hospital in Mississippi hired ISES Corporation to perform an elevator condition analysis. The work consisted of inspecting 13 hydraulic and traction elevators with travels from three to five floors. The units ranged in age from 1950 to 2001, while equipment conditions varied from new to antiquated. A final report was delivered detailing all elevators in the facility.
One particular item observed in the facility showed a machine room floor for an overhead traction elevator that was not completed. The floor displayed metal concrete supports where parts of the floor were not poured. This had been an issue for some time and it was pointed out to the staff that this created an unsafe work environment for the elevator mechanic.
A second item of note displayed roof leaks in two separate penthouse machine rooms. One room utilized a barrel and a plastic sheet to keep rainwater off the elevator equipment. Another room had a metal plate that was bent over the elevator machine motor to deflect water from a roof leak directly above the motor. These issues were brought to the attention of the staff with the intent to repair the roofs.
Another important issue was the lack of ladders in four different pits. Accessing these areas with no permanent ladders can be very dangerous for elevator mechanics. Additionally, the elevator contract did not have a provision for the elevator mechanic to be responsible for cleaning the equipment. These items were detailed in the elevator report with the intent that they would be corrected.
One final concern that was presented to the hospital staff was the considerable amount of modernization work that needed to be performed. Projects were created that detailed the costs to replace the units and the priorities for each elevator under consideration. The information was then presented to the staff to procure funding for future work.
